This formation is exposed in the central Cordillera Septentrional mountains which parallel the northern coast of the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The formation dates from the Early Oligocene to Early Miocene periods. The formation is known for the lignite and amber deposits found in its thick, upper sandstone layer.
