The Hell Creek Formation dates to the Maastrichtian stage of the Upper/Late Cretaceous period. Exposures of this formation are found in the arid badlands of Wyoming, Montana, and North and South Dakota. However, 66 million years ago, these areas were dominated by lush, forested river deltas, teaming with dinosaurs, crocodiles and a diverse range of other prehistoric creatures.
